Historical Note

The Emmy Awards are hosted by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The Academy was founded by Syd Cassyd in 1946, just one month after network television was created. The nonprofit organization is devoted to advancement of telecommunications arts and sciences and to fostering creative leadership in the telecommunications industry. It is also the only major organization devoted entirely to television.

The first Emmy Awards ceremony was held in 1949. This event was created to recognize excellence in television programming. The name “Emmy” came from “Immy,” a nickname for the image orthicon camera tube, which was a key element in the development of modern television. The word was feminized as “Emmy” to complement the design chosen for the statuette, which features a winged woman holding an atom. There are three sister organizations that hold the Emmy Awards each year: the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (Primetime), the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (Daytime, Sports, News and Documentary), and the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (International).

All videos contained in this collection were nominated for a category in either the News and Documentary or Sports Emmy Awards Ceremony. Some titles for the News and Documentary videos include “Iraq Invades Kuwait,” “Flood of '93,” and “CNN's Coverage of the Olympic Park Bombing;” some of the Sports titles include “1992 Winter Olympics,” “This Is The NFL,” “X–Games,” and “Babe Ruth.”
