Letter 55 Commentary
This letter has the same atmosphere as letter 54, in regards to the confusion and crisis Clarissa is in, except she feels pressured to make the decision even quicker now. It seems Clarissa is throwing a “pity party” for herself because she continues to write letters to Miss Howe about all her misfortunes. It is also important to mention that she starts talking about Lovelace in a positive way, mentioning the ways he wants to help her in this situation; however, the proceeds to get angry with him. She mentions how he has the nerve to threaten her own brother. This letter clearly demonstrates the struggle Clarissa has over her feelings toward Lovelace, it seems like she knows she likes him but wants to prevent anyone else from thinking that. It is also ironic that she mentions the idea of marrying Lovelace, when she knows nobody would go for that.-JP
