Letter 311:
Lost In Emotion
Here Clarissa has become
completely paranoid and frantic. She
does not know who she can trust and does not feel she has anyone she can rely
on. Lovelace always manages to
corrupt those she comes in contact with. She
is lost in emotion. She is filled
with self-pity and lacks the ability to keep herself together.
She begs the Lord for mercy and
claims she is the poor Clarissa Harlowe. She
is asking the Lord for help because He is possibly the only one who can help her
now. The reader also gets the
feeling that she is attempting to make Miss Howe feel pity for her friend and
the situation she is in. She wants
Anna to feel that Clarissa is completely stuck and the world is corrupted by
Lovelace.
