Things are happening in the library!

The James A. Cannavino Library has had a busy start to the semester! We’ve had tons of displays, and the semester has just reached its halfway point.

One of the most exciting new initiatives in the library is The Democracy Wall. The Democracy Wall is located on the second floor and asks our students to voice their opinions about issues through post-it notes stuck to the wall. Currently, students are asked to answer the prompt “describe the world we want”.

In addition to the democracy wall, we have a whiteboard on the second floor asking our students fun questions to answer as they pass by.  We’ve asked patrons things like what books they read over the summer, what their favorite places to study in the library are, and what their favorite banned books are. We want to hear what patrons have to say!

There are three displays in our secondary display space on the second floor. We started off the semester with a display about what patrons and staff read over the summer. Last month we had a display about the Nobel Prize Awards where patrons could learn about past winners and write who they think will win the prize next. Currently, we have a display about LGBT History Month.

In our main display area, there was a display for Banned Books Week that featured tons of banned books and flames (paper flames – don't worry). The display only lasted for the span of Banned Books Week, but you could exercise your right to read by reading banned books all year long. We also had a display for Hispanic Heritage Month. Currently, we have a display for Disability Awareness Week.  The Circulation and Reference desks are looking very seasonal with tons of Halloween decorations.  Be sure to check them out!

We also have two exciting new programs coming up in the library. On October 27th, we will be hosting our first library book club.  We will be reading Carmilla!  To learn more, check out our Guide. We will also be holding a Silent Book Club on November 5th. This is a non-traditional book club where there is no required text for people to read and no discussion. Students will get the chance to decompress and read for a little while.

If students are looking for some fun books to read, check out the Poughkeepsie Public Library Bookmobile, Rover. The Bookmobile will be on campus November 1 and November 15 from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Students can get a Poughkeepsie Public Library card that allows them to check out items from the Bookmobile, from the whole Mid-Hudson Library System, and get access to eBooks and eAudiobooks. Bookmobile items should be returned to the Bookmobile.

It has been a very busy semester, and we are looking forward to more exciting things.
