Lizbeth Santos-Cruz

New YorkFor many first-generation college students, finding a supportive community can be just as important as choosing the right program. For Lizbeth Santos-Cruz, a Political Science and Global Studies major, the sense of belonging she found at Marist and the unexpected opportunities that followed made all the difference. “As a first-generation student, I didn’t fully understand what I needed to look for in a college or university,” she said. But after touring Marist’s campus and seeing how close-knit and supportive the community was, she felt immediately at home.
Though studying abroad during her freshman year wasn’t part of her original plan, Lizbeth embraced the opportunity to spend her first year studying in Dublin, Ireland. “The idea of studying abroad hadn’t even seemed possible to me before due to financial constraints and a lack of experience in the subject.” she explained. Thanks to the helpfulness of the Marist Abroad Office and the warmth of staff both in Dublin and Big Pond, she felt welcomed and supported every step of the way. Because of this supportive experience she has been inspired to travel more, seek out cultural enrichment, and deepen her understanding of the world around her.
Alongside her academic journey, Lizbeth has formed meaningful connections with faculty, especially with Pat Taylor, an advisor who guides students through applying for prestigious and competitive scholarships. “Working with Pat has helped me learn a lot about myself and what I want for my future,” she said. “She’s been a pillar of support, empathy, and positivity—always encouraging me to pursue my dreams, even when they seem distant.” This kind of mentorship, she noted, was only possible because of the FDE program’s resources and encouragement, which planted the seed that she is capable of achieving more than she ever imagined.
For students considering Marist’s FDE program, Lizbeth has this advice: “Believe in yourself. It’s scary to be in a different country all alone, but you know more than you think. You’ll stumble and make mistakes, but those are the best learning experiences—and great stories! You’re not alone. Staff and fellow students are there to support you.”
She encourages students to embrace the experience fully. “Before you know it, you’ll be packing your bags to come back home. So, make sure to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience and make lifelong friends while there.. It’s a unique and unforgettable way to start your college journey.”
